Schools Programmes

Since 2013 the youth team have been delivering projects in schools across Belfast. Over the course of the academic year we work with over 750 young people in schools across a number of the programmes. The youth team facilitate sessions with pupils in their class groups, usually weekly throughout a term.

Ubuntu: I am because we are

Our largest area of work in schools is Ubuntu (I am because we are) which promotes diversity and good relations with participants.

This is a non-formal education programme which uses dialogue and interactive learning methods to tackle issues of diversity, the religious divide in Northern Ireland and associated issues.

Topics include identity, stereotyping, sectarianism, discrimination and migration.

What do the teachers say?

“Having observed the UBUNTU project with Belfast YMCA, I am thoroughly impressed by the impactful approach to education it offers. The interactive lessons not only captivate students but also infuse fun seamlessly into the learning process. The course content, centred on the history of Northern Ireland, serves as a foundation for fostering mutual respect, tolerance, and understanding among students.

The structured delivery of the course stands out as a testament to Belfast YMCA's commitment to providing a platform where students actively engage with the subject matter. Witnessing the way in which the program cultivates an environment conducive to meaningful discussions and perspectives, I've seen firsthand how it contributes to shaping well-rounded individuals who appreciate diversity and history.

Kudos to Belfast YMCA for orchestrating such a valuable programme that not only educates but also shapes the mindset of future generations towards building a more harmonious society."

"Peter and the YMCA team were fantastic.  Students were engaged from the start and were encouraged to explore complex issues in an accessible and interesting way.  Peter developed a strong rapport with the students and students felt confident about expressing their opinions.  Each session was thought-provoking and well paced so students were engaged throughout.  A very worthwhile course."
