Our Community Garden

In an initiative to foster community engagement and inclusivity, Belfast YMCA is embarking on the creation of a vibrant Community Garden and Grow project at its site, to serve as a central hub for individuals of all ages and abilities. After collaboration with local partners, a dedicated 10-member volunteer group has emerged to lead the project, offering both practical expertise and strategic planning support.

Solas, an organisation specialising in supporting individuals with autism and additional needs, has pledged its commitment to the project and will oversee the management of one of the polytunnels. Stranmillis Primary School will be enthusiastically integrating the Community Garden into its educational agenda. Additionally, Orchardville, a charity dedicated to supporting people with learning disabilities, has thrown its support behind the initiative, with plans to utilise the space for the benefit of their service users, who will actively participate as volunteers.

The project's first phase is already underway, focusing on clearing the site and removing overgrowth and invasive weeds. To extend the growing season and regulate temperature, two polytunnels have been installed. This first phase has been made possible thanks to a small grant through Live Here Love Here.

Moving forward, the next stage will involve further groundworks to establish accessible paths and lay foundations for a future community hub. Enhancements in accessibility will continue with the introduction of seating areas and raised beds in subsequent phases.

The project's final phase will feature the installation of an upcycled shipping container, serving as a community space.  This versatile space is destined to be a hub for training, workshops, and activities catering to all ages.

To support this  initiative, Belfast YMCA has launched the "Gift for the Garden" Fundraising Campaign.
